You’ve seen those lists, right? The lists that say you need to have this or have done that  before you’re 30 or married or reached whatever milestone in life.

Well, here’s something you really do need. A go-to recipe! Whether you want to cook a home-cooked meal for a friend, a date or your entire family, every girl needs a recipe they can whip up when the need arises. Something that is relatively easy and looks like you slaved in the kitchen all day, but doesn’t involve placing an order!

I recently got together with my friend, Chef Tiffany Derry, who you probably remember from Top Chef, and we created some serious magic in the Kraddick Kitchen!

My mom is not a big cook, but Meatballs and Sauce is one of her specialties and it’s delish! Chef Tiffany had TOO much fun hanging out in the Kraddick Kitchen but she also shared a few food prep secrets! She is the real deal and if you’re in the Uptown area, make sure you stop by her restaurant, The Cupboard. It’s a grab and go café where you can pick up a quick breakfast, lunch … they even have sushi!

But before you do that, stop by the store, pick up these ingredients and start perfecting your go-to meal!

Meatballs & Sauce


2 cups of chopped onion
10 cloves of minced garlic
10 Tbsp of cooking oil

when the onions are cooked, add

2 15oz cans of tomato sauce
4 6oz cans of tomato paste
Cook for 15 minutes on a low fire, stirring often


10 cups of water
6 T of sugar – We omitted the sugar when we made it to make it low carb but if you’re not counting carbs then knock yourself out!
4 tsp of salt
2 tsp Italian seasoning
2 tsp sweet basil
2 tsp of pepper

Cook for at least one hour, uncovered and stir often.


1 1/2 pounds of lean ground beef
1 1/2 cups of bread crumbs
1/4 cup of onions
Handful of celery leaves
Handful of parsley
1 egg
Liberal sprinkling of parmesan cheese
Sweet basil
Garlic powder

Roll into small golf ball sized balls and fry them or bake them. Add the meatballs to the sauce and cook for at least another hour or two.

Italian Chopped Salad

Oregano Vinaigrette

Serves 8 appetizer portions or 4 main-course servings

2 1/2 Tbsp red-wine vinegar
2 Tbsp fresh oregano
1 lemon, juiced, plus more to taste
2 garlic cloves, smashed
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 1/2 C extra-virgin olive oil (The GOOD olive oil)


1/2 small red onion, chilled
1 small head iceberg lettuce
1 medium head radicchio
1 pint small sweet cherry tomatoes
1 avocado
1/4 lb sweet blue cheese
1/4 lb Genoa salami, julienne
5 pepperoncini, stems discarded, thinly sliced

Combine salad ingredients and toss in vinaigrette to taste!!

Serve it up and wait for your friends and family to be amazed!
